Well, here we are in day 4 of the Obama administration, and one can’t say that inertia is a part of his new mandate. Honestly, I was going to do an article about the mid-season replacement shows, as well as some Oscar contenders that I’ve recently seen but the stuff going on is a little more interesting. Also, as far as the news goes, it feels that all the bubble gum-pop culture stories are falling by the wayside.
The first new big change is the eventual closing of Guantanamo Bay’s detention facility, which (if you’ve been living under a rock) is where they keep all the “suspected terrorists.” I’m sure many suspects probably are legitimate threats, but no one really knows for sure about all of them. Isn’t it safe to say that if they wanted to, they could throw anyone they wanted in there? Don’t get me wrong, though, I think it is a good thing that they are closing it.
There are, in my opinion, familiar ties between the prisoners in Japanese internment camps and those jailed in Guatanamo Bay. During WWII, 120,000 Japanese Americans (anyone with at least 1/16 Japanese blood) were jailed in civilian detention camps. They were under duress there, just like they have been at Guantanamo Bay. What are the criterion for internment at Gitmo? I have no idea, and I don’t think anyone else knows, either. Recently, a released prisoner took a leadership position with Al Queda. Is that because he’s always been a terrorist, or was he turned into on as a result of his imprisonment? The main reason I like this decision is because it takes away our enemies fuel to their fire. If we torture them, they will see fit to torture us. It doesn’t stoop to their level. Not to mention the fact that I’ve read time and time again about torture not working. Anyone under that kind of duress will tell their captors whatever they want to hear.
That’s pretty much all I wanted to say on the serious tip. Here’s a few funny articles that I’ve included to entertain you folks:
This is GREAT. They really believe that this dude transformed himself into a friggin’ goat while being chased by the authorities. Ahh, Nigeria!
Another fantastic article. This is a real thing. Drug dealers, who are always creative with their product name – Blue Magic, anyone? – have done it. (Speaking of drug names, when I was a Freshman in college, the first time I dropped acid was with an LSD tab named “Screaming Faces,” and on the tab was the screaming face from Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” album. This should have tipped me off that it was strong acid, that and the fact that it was the size of a postage stamp. We then proceeded to have a 16 hour long acid trip. Insane. I literally thought I was a glass of orange juice. My friends Richie and Ned, God bless them for dealing with me, all they could do is give me a soccer ball to bounce against a wall for 5 hours.) Anywho, dealers have named their new heroin packets “Obama.” Yup.
And that’s all I have for this week! Talk to everyone on Monday!
