The transformative power of special makeup effects – the ability to alter an actor’s appearance by implementation of prosthetic materials, careful facial painting, and the addition of hair pieces – is on full display with the myriad characters brought to life in the currently released film Cloud Atlas, starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, and Jim Sturgess, all in multiple roles. Sectioned off into six intertwined storylines, the enormity of the film warranted its division into two independently functioning crews: one on a team led by the American Wachowski directors, and the other manned by German director Tom Tykwer.
