SH!T HAPPENS!!!

Hello everyone!

You know the old phrase “Shit Happens?” Well, I guess you could say that it certainly has this past year. 2008 will be one of those years that people remember. A LOT of crapola happened this year – some good, some bad, all of it memorable. Years from now it will be one of those periods in time where we say “hey do you remember when this or that happened, and then that happened, and that happened?” No matter how challenging it may or may not have been or entertaining it may all have been, it’s all been great for writing this article! I mean, the more that “shit happens,” the more shit I get to have an opinion about. So here’s a few more comments on stories this year:

The WGA Strike – If you remember correctly (and I know a lot has happened between now and then), last New Year rang in the TV industry with a resounding thud. It was in the midst of a strike, both sides at an impasse, picketers bottle-necking the entrance to every TV studio/network in town. I worked during the strike, and seeing the picketers out there every day, whether I agreed with what they were picketing over or not (I didn’t and still don’t agree!), it made for a depressing work environment. At the end of the day, what they ultimately settled for DID NOT need to be obtained by striking. Also, with economic strife happening as it did in ‘08, wouldn’t it have been nice to have some escapist scripted TV to indulge in, when the shit hit the fan in the fall? No, there was limited scripted programming premiering in the fall of ‘08, due to the strike shutting everything down. Instead, features have been breaking lately (though, the records don’t take into account the yearly rise of ticket prices), and TV ratings have been down. On the other side of the coin, a few TV notables for the year would be Celebrity Rehab, and the re-emergence of Saturday Night Live.

The Olympics – THIS was the escapist fare for me during the month of August. Phelps, Alicia Sacremoni and her nasty right hook, Bela Karolyi’s enthusiasm, The Redeem Team, and underage Chinese gymnasts all made for an entertaining month

The Election -The 2008 election was one of the most important in decades, and also proved to be the most entertaining. Palin, McCain, Biden, Obama all lived up to the hype as America made one of the most adult, grown-up decisions that I can remember. Everyone give yourselves a pat on the back for this one!

The Collapse – September through December 2008 was as terrifying as it was entertaining. I mean, the economy collapsed. COUNTRIES filed for bankruptcy. Entire industries and states all jockeyed for a pie of the bailout pie. Here’s a few other things that should get a chunk of bailout:

-The Detroit Lions
-Rod Blagojevich’s hairstylist
-Britney Spears’ therapist
-The educational system in the US
-My 03 Ford Focus

A few other random thoughts and cool links:

-Rock lyrics of the year go to Nickleback for the song “Something In Your Mouth”:
“‘Cause you look so much cuter with something in your mouth.” Best. Lyrics. Ever.

-The December 22nd issue of The New Yorker has printed an article from Mark Twain titled “The Privilege of the Grave” about free speech and freedom of expression, and how the people who enjoy true free speech are dead people. Fantastic stuff. Check it out. It was originally printed in 1905, which was the last decade of Twain’s life, after his bankruptcy and the deaths of his wife and daughter. One can just feel his world weariness in the article.

-The last article I wrote I included a list of best ad’s of 2008. Just wanted to add one more. This is an ad for “Evil Dead: The Musical,” and pretty much rules.

-This ad is the most uncomfortable, creepy ad I’ve ever seen in my life. It makes the 2-faced Southwest Airlines commercial seem as tame as the old commercial for Sweet Pickles. Leave it to the Germans to make a creepy ad about a creepy topic (child molestation). This ad is terrible and makes me want to go take a shower.

I ACTUALLY DONT KNOW IF THE LINKS WILL WORK OR NOT. PLEASE SOMEONE LET ME KNOW!

-Just wanted to give a shout-out to the L Street Brownies in South Boston, MA, who went for something like their 100th New Year’s Day swim in the Boston Harbor. I can’t even explain how crazy these guys and gals are. Yes, they swim in the Boston Harbor in January, as if swimming in the Boston Harbor wasn’t bad enough for your health. (Californian translation: it’s like swimming north of the Santa Monica pier right after it rains).

-Did anyone catch Kathy Griffin on CNN for New Years? After I watched Dick Clark (poor guy, I really felt for him try to get through the telecast) my G.F. and I switched over to CNN to check out the over-advertised Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper’s telecast. I actually enjoyed it more than any time I’ve ever seen Kathy Griffin, whom I’m not a huge fan of. She lashed out at a heckler, immediately making it the most entertaining New Year’s telecast I’d ever seen (a far cry from the milquetoast Ryan Seacrest).

And that’s all I have for now…please leave a comment underneath!
