How many of you are familiar with King Edward VIII abdication of his father’s throne? Assuming that I am still talking to movie fans across America, my assumption is not many. Perhaps a simpler question would be, how many of you are familiar with the word abdication?

Crickets…

Needless to say, the subject matter of King’s Speech, a film produced largely by filmmakers from across the pond, is very, well, foreign to most American audiences. King’s Speech is the inspiring story of King George VI rise to the thrown, during the tumultuous rise of Hitler and the Nazi regime in mid 20th century Europe. Okay, so it’s not exactly a remake of Karate Kid, where we know what is going to happen to Will Smith’s son (under the wise tutelage of Jackie Chan) before we even begin to order fake butter on our popcorn.
